OTHER RESOURCES California Disability Access Information This website is a good resource for information regarding disability laws in general. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) The ADA is a major federal civil rights law that protects citizens with disabilities.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) The IDEA is a federal law guaranteeing important rights for children with disabilities. 1973 Rehabilitation Act Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination in the education of children and youth with disabilities in education, health, welfare, social programs, and any other programs and activities that receive federal funds. Title V of the Social Security Act Title V authorizes federal grants to states so that they can extend and improve medical and other care services to children who are disabled or who have special health care needs. The Lanterman Act The Lanterman Act is a state law which establishes the rights of persons with developmental disabilities to services and supports so that they can lead independent, productive lives within the community. The Unruh Civil Rights Act is a California State law that provides protection from discrimination to a variety of protected classes (race, color, religion, disability, etc) by all business establishments in California. Individuals must comply with both federal and state laws—whichever is more protective. · Summary of the Unruh Civil Rights Act from the CA Disability Access Information website High Risk Infant Interagency Council (HRIIC) HRIIC is a county-wide parent/professional collaborative concerned with infants and young children ages birth through five with special health care needs and their families. HRIIC works to ensure that these children receive family-centered services in a timely and coordinated manner through interagency collaboration. Their website contains valuable information and links, as well as printable resource materials such as a family packet, a developmental checklist, and resource referral pads for family physicians. Improving Transition Outcomes Project (ITOP) The ITOP Interagency Council’s mission is to improve services and outcomes for youth with disabilities ages 14-24 in making successful and seamless transitions towards maximum self-sufficiency and independent living. Their website has a wealth of resources for transition aged youth with disabilities and their families. SFkids.org is an information resource created by San Francisco parents for San Francisco parents. It includes over 60 pages of content and lists over 1200 organizations that provide services in San Francisco, including art, music, and sports classes; social services; and more. SFKids.org features the City's most comprehensive Family Events Calendar. Support for Families of Children with Disabilities (SFCD) Support for Families provides information, education, and parent-to-parent support to families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need in San Francisco. SFCD also conducts workshops for professionals and has an Open Gate resource center, support line, library, and toy library. Their website has many valuable publications and resource guides regarding disabilities. Area Board V Area Boards are established in the Lanterman Act to protect the rights of persons with developmental disabilities. Area Board V provides advocacy, public information, and support for independent citizen organizations. 510-286-0439 or areabd5@concentric.net CCLC is a national non-profit legal service that addresses the legal needs of children with disabilities in childcare. Community Alliance for Special Education (CASE) CASE provides legal support, representation, free technical assistance, consultations and training to parents whose children need appropriate special education services. Protection and Advocacy, Inc. (PAI) PAI is a nonprofit agency that works in partnership with people with disabilities to protect, advocate for, and advance their human, legal and service rights. San Francisco Unified School District: Special Education Services The AT Network is dedicated to expanding the accessibility of tools, resources, and technology that will help increase independence, improve personal productivity and enhance the quality of life for all Californians. This tax credit is available for those who incur expenses in order to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
